Garages - A
Multipurpose Space Just Like The Kitchen |
 |

The value of a
well-designed, organized and clean garage
is often underestimated. The kitchen has
long held the title of hardest working
room in the house because of the many
roles it plays in our lives – restaurant,
convention center, home office, study
hall. But that’s true only if you don’t
count the garage.
Granted, we don’t ordinarily live in the
garage, but, attached or not, a garage is
still a critical part of our domestic
environment. Like a kitchen, a garage is a
multipurpose space, if only by default.
Garages inevitably turn into warehouses
for all sorts of things we don’t want or
can’t fit into the house. It is the
equivalent of a kitchen junk drawer with
walls and a roof.

R & R On A
Budget |
 |

Rather than spending thousands on your
vacation this year, consider some less
expensive options. There are many ways to
experience family fun on a budget.
• Visit a state park. Depending on the
park’s amenities, you may find yourself hiking
a trail, panning for gold, riding an
all-terrain-vehicle, swimming in a lake, or
visiting a historic battleground.
• Take a tour of caverns or caves. Take
a boat or walking tour as a guide explains how
caves are formed. Explore the beauty and
wonder of nature’s artists.
• Go camping. You don’t have to go out
of town to camp. Driving to a campsite close
to home can provide quality family time. Most
campgrounds offer family activities like
swimming, horseback riding and wagon rides,
which are included in the cost of site rental.
Quality vacations don’t have to be expensive.
You can learn more about inexpensive
opportunities by contacting your state or city
bureau of tourism.

Sleep
Tight |
 |
When
is the last time you had a great
night’s sleep? For many, a good
night’s sleep is rare. If you have
trouble falling asleep, staying
asleep or if you don’t feel
well-rested in the morning, try
these techniques:
• Listen to Sounds of Nature.
Some people find sounds from nature
soothing. You can purchase CDs of
serene natural sounds like running
water or crashing waves.
• Avoid Bedtime Snacks.
Increased blood sugar levels inhibit
sleep and caffeinated drinks can
keep you awake, so it’s best not to
eat or drink right before bed.
• Sleep In Complete Darkness.
A small amount of light can disrupt
your body’s normal sleep cycle.
Sleeping with a nightlight may
reduce the amount of sleep you get. |

The
New Food Pyramid |
 |
The
government has launched a new food
pyramid designed to help Americans
become healthier and trimmer. For
the first time, it emphasizes
exercise as well as diet.
It interprets food groups in a
rainbow of colored bands: orange for
grains, green for vegetables, red
for fruits, yellow for oils, blue
for milk products, and purple for
meats and beans.
Food groups such as vegetables and
milk products have wide bands. The
yellow for oils is just a sliver.
Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns
says that while Americans were
familiar with the old pyramid, not
many followed its recommendations.
In an effort to increase
participation in its program, the
new pyramid steers consumers to its
Web site,
mypyramid.gov. The Web site
allows users to enter age, sex, and
activity levels in order to get a
personalized diet.
The new pyramid also advocates
eating a variety of foods and
watching calories rather than
focusing on one food group over
another.
